Fouad Mezher | Lebanon
Based in Lebanon, Fouad Mezher works as an illustrator on projects ranging from children’s books to animations, but his primary focus is on comics. His work in comics started with Samandal in which he wrote and illustrated the series The Educator as well as other short comics. His comics have featured deaths caused by reanimated specters, pens, giant feet and an assortment of mutant animals.
Mezher’s work in comics extends beyond making, with co-organizing, acting as a jury member co-teaching workshops and designing promotional material at the International Festival of Comics – Beirut: 2012. In 2015. Mezher was invited to speak at Arab Comics: 90 Years of Popular Visual Culture, a symposium at Brown University, RI, and at “Al Sutouh” roundtables and “the artist at work” workshops at Cairocomix. Othman Selmi | Tunisia
Othman Selmi was born in 1977 in Tunisia. After receiving his diploma in graphic arts, he devoted his time to comics at a cartoon studio. He is currently Director of Creativity in a communications agency. He wrote many books for young Tunisians, and drew in many magazines abroad, among them we mention F / I / M ² / P, Rukh, Popoli and the Italian Internazionale, in addition to writing theatrical posters.
I usually work in my office late at night since I am surrounded by my books and pens. When I am out, I like to work in a cafe overlooking the street. The hustle and bustle along with the crowd around me put me in my own bubble fed with words and dialogue. Dynamism of tables also looks strangely like that of boxes of a cartoon board.

Maya Fidawi | Lebanon
I was pretty much known to be the lazy students throughout my school years, but i was also known as “that girl who knows how to draw” .. so i survived by that, waiting for the art class impatiently; the only subject that woke me up from the coma I had during all those years.
After miraculously graduating, it didn’t really take me much time to decide that my passion was art, so i enrolled at the Lebanese university , faculty of art, and majored in painting and sculpting, graduating in 2000, and freelancing since my 1st year of university.
I illustrated my 1st book in 2004, and I have over 37 books, working with several publishers, in Lebanon, Morocco, UAE and Jordan. I have to admit that my greatest inspiration is my 2 little monkeys. Beirut with all the craziness that makes it so charming, the people, the smallest daily details, the stress, and the chaos. these are all my source of inspiration…. and jazz too 🙂

Cairo Comix Festival
CairoComix Festival deals in particular with the development of the independent movement of comics in Egypt at a large scale in the Middle East and North Africa, where comics represent a popular form and art equivalent to other media means such as street art, animation, cinema, video art and graphic design; and where artists in the field usually practice one or more of these arts. CairoComix is regarded as a celebration of art gathering readers, painters and writers of this art, whether at the local or international level in one place, which isn’t usually seen but in the presentation of different awards such as Best Arab Comic Award. The first edition of the festival took place in September 2015, and included 20 guests coming from Arab and other countries. The schedule of the festival comprises a major exhibition of a comics’ artist, another one of contemporary comics titled “Chmarikh”, a competition for the best works in comics in six categories, as well as a marketplace of the latest editions of comics in Egypt and the Arab region including a section for latest versions and independent artists.
CAIROCOMIX Founders:
Egyptian comics artists; Mohammed Shennawy cofounder of “ToTok” magazine and “The 9th Art”, Magdy ElShafei: Creator of the first Egyptian graphic novel “Metro”, Twins Cartoon (Mohammad and Haitham Elseht): founders of “Garage” magazine and the artist collective “Kawkab Elfananeen”.
